Iggy Pop |
Iggy has written his first film score for an independant feature called "The Brave", directed by, co-written by, and starring Johnny Depp (with a cameo by Marlon Brando); he brought me out to L.A. to play on the score. It was just me, Iggy, his drummer Larry, and percussionist Steve Forman locked in the studio-- at the end of three weeks we had a score. Iggy's instincts were excellent; very few pop artists have the knack of writing music for film. |
| 13 Dec 96 |
Tom Russell |
Violin mandolin, electric slide guitar and Dobro on two recording projects Tom is working on. The first is a "best of", inculding duets with Nancy Griffith, Iris DeMent and others. The second is a collection of Tom's "cowboy" songs. Both are, as usual, full of wonderful writing and performing. |
| 27 Oct 96 |
Silverchair |
Violin on a song with the refrain "I live in the cemetery..."; stern lyrics by a very sweet, unpretentious, talented trio of kids that seem to me like they just wanna have fun. The session was on the night the Yankees won the world series, and they got quite a kick out of yelling out the window with all the other New Yorkers. Jane Scarpantoni wrote the string chart, and it's quite good in that it has a real rock attitude. |
| 11 Jul 96 |
The Courage Brothers (independent) |
Pedal steel on three or four songs. Kevin Salem produced; I really have been having fun playing on his sessions, as he loves melding different musical styles, both old & new. |

Pedal steel guitar on one song; Russ Titelman producer. |
| 27 May 96 |
Allen Ginsberg
(Mercury Records) |
Recording session for "Ballad Of The Skeletons" (the piece we did at the Tibet House benefit). When we did it live Allen read, I played electric guitar, and Lenny Kaye (of the Patti Smith Group) played bass. It seems Danny Goldberg was in the audience and really loved it. I'm overjoyed to see that Danny intends Mercury Records to become involved in things like this (proving there is life beyond MTV). For the session Mark Ribot was added on guitar. We also did a recording of "Amazing Grace" with new lyrics by AG. |
| 07 May 96 |
Marshall Crenshaw
(Razor & Tie Records) |
Fiddle on Marshall's "Until I Hear It From You" (The Gin Blossoms had the hit) for "In Their Own Words, Vol. 3"; Marshall played acoustic and Andy York (from Mellencamp's band) played electric baritone guitar. Lotsa fun. |
| 16 March 96 |
Various artists
(Rounder Records?) |
This was done at Hit Shack B in Austin on the last day of SXSW for a compilation album of truckers' songs. If you dropped by the studio that day and could sing or play, you were probably on the session. I played fiddle on "Six Days On The Road" (with Gurf Morlix and various members of The Skeletons among others). |
